It was urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg who said, “Social well-being and psychological health depend upon community.” He was the one who first coined the term “third places,” which are the public places where people can gather and interact—in contrast to first places (home) and second places (work). In this presentation, attendees will discover how their aquatic facility can serve the needs of its community in a broader context, by transforming into a Third Place that is inclusive and welcoming for all. From design renovations and technology investments to programming changes and maintenance upgrades, any community aquatic center can incorporate key elements that work together to define a Third Place for every demographic and generation—especially those marginalized by traditional public offerings. The lessons learned here will not only impact your facility’s bottom line, but also change the way your community is shaped.
