Waterborne diseases cause a substantial burden of illness, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States each year. Many of the identified waterborne diseases can be transmitted during recreational water activities. Thus, it is important for aquatics industry stakeholders to understand the magnitude of waterborne disease burden in the United States and ways they can promote healthy swimming at their facilities.
