Rob Butcher, President
Sarasota, Florida

Rob is the CEO of Swim Across America (SAA). Prior to SAA, Rob was Executive Director of US Masters Swimming, taking it from a volunteer governed and operated organization to one with a professional staff responsible for delivering programs and services. Under Rob’s leadership, USMS membership grew from 40,000 to 65,000 members with an operating budget of around $4M. Prior to joining USMS, Rob was the Chief Marketing Officer for World Racing Group and Senior Director of Marketing Partnerships for International Speedway Corporation (ISC). He was a four-year scholarship swimmer for Georgia Southern University, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing.  In 1995, he earned a Masters degree in Sports Administration, also from Georgia Southern University. Rob qualified to compete in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. 

James R. Mock, Vice President
St. Paul, Minnesota

Jim has worked for Ecolab for over 40 years starting as a territory manager in the Institutional Division and then through career advances became Director of Ecolab’s Aqua Balance Program. Jim has worked with commercial swimming pools and spas for over 22 years and created and developed Ecolab’s Remote Monitoring Center for commercial pools. He is currently involved in the Standards Committee with NSF and has recently been named to the NSF 416 Water Chemicals - Joint Committee. He has been a Certified Pool Operator Instructor for the NSPF for over 15 years. He was just recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Swimming Pool Foundation. He has three registered patents for systems involved in the dispensing of chemical into commercial bodies of water and a 4th one under consideration. Jim has addressed many conferences on the operational issues of commercial swimming pools and spas. He has made presentations in Hawaii, California, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Minnesota and Florida over the last few years. He is recognized for the practical application of his knowledge to the challenging everyday issues. His personal background in large commercial pools and water parks make him uniquely qualified to serve in this industry.

Karl R. Frykman, Treasurer
Pentair

Karl R. Frykman was named Pentair's senior vice president and president of its Water segment in 2017. He previously served as president of Pentair's Water Quality Systems global business unit, and also led the Aquatic Systems business, both now a part of the Water segment. Prior to joining Pentair, Frykman served as vice president of operations for American Products, vice president of research and development and manufacturing for Anthony Pools, and vice president of Poolsaver. Frykman holds an MBA from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University.

Captain Julie Gilchrist, M.D., Secretary
Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention

Captain Julie Gilchrist, M.D. is a pediatrician and medical epidemiologist, recently retired from the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention (DUIP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Julie is a world-leading expert on drowning prevention and water safety promotion, sports and recreation-related injury prevention, and other issues that primarily affect children, including choking, suffocation, ingestions and playground injuries.

Troy Franzen
Zodiac Pool Systems

Troy Franzen has been Managing Director-Americas since January 2012. Troy joined Zodiac Pool Systems as Vice President of Business Development in early 2010 and served as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Americas prior to his promotion as Managing Director. He has full P&L responsibility and manages strategic planning and execution for the U.S., Canadian and Latin American markets. In addition, Troy oversees Zodiac’s Cover Pools business out of Salt Lake City, UT. He has more than 25 years of experience in sales, marketing and general management and is an accomplished leader and strategic thinker.

Prior to joining Zodiac, Troy served as Vice President of Retail Sales for the Hardware and Home Improvement division of Black & Decker and previously, as Vice President and General Manager of Black & Decker’s Outdoor Products division. He received his B.A. in Speech Communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL.  Troy has been married for 24 years to Suzanne and has one son, Brody (USC, May ’17); a daughter, Sydney attending Rice University; and a daughter Hailey a senior in high school.

Franceen Gonzales
British Columbia, Canada

Franceen is the Executive Vice President of Business Development for WhiteWater West Industries of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.  WhiteWater is the global leader in designing and manufacturing attractions for the waterpark and amusement industries.  Franceen is also a 28-year aquatics industry veteran starting with her first job as a pool technician to working as an executive for Great Wolf Resorts, Six Flags, and Golfland Entertainment Centers where she has focused on building leadership teams, developing operating protocols, consulting on the design of new waterparks and resorts, and directing risk management programs.  Franceen volunteers in leadership roles at IAAPA, WWA, ASTM, and AIMS in addition to her role as Secretary for the NSPF board of directors.  

Clark Hale
Hayward Industries

Clark Hale of Hayward Industries maintains an impressive 25-year portfolio of executive experience with companies, such as Brooks Instrument, Victaulic Company, and Emerson Electric. Now serving with Hayward at the Elizabeth, New Jersey headquarters, he oversees the global business operations of the company's complete line of innovative, energy-efficient solutions for residential and commercial pools and spas.

Most recently, Hale served as President and CEO of Brooks Instrument, where he was responsible for leading all global operations for the leading industry flow measurement and control business. Previously, Clark was Executive VP of Victaulic Company, a manufacturer of specialty mechanical piping systems, where he served for six years.  Additionally, during a 17-0year career with Emerson Electric, he held a number of operation leadership positions before being named Division President of ASCO Valve-U.S. and Copeland Refrigeration.  Hale holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.

Bill Kent
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Bill is Owner/President of Team Horner in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Team Horner is a group of companies focused on different functions within the swimming pool and spa business worldwide.  As of April 2008, Team Horner approximately 400 employees and represents over 140 different manufacturers. Bill graduated from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, with a Bachelor of Science-Physics and from Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH, with a - Masters of Business Administration in–Economics.  Bill also completed the General Electric Co. - Manufacturing Problems Analysis Program and The Executive Committee program, a continuing education program for company presidents public and private) that focuses on improving Team Building, Leadership, and Financial Skills and a variety of other business topics.  Bill has served in a spectrum of volunteer leadership roles in the pool, spa, and aquatics fields.

Skip Phillips
Escondido, CA

Skip Phillips is one of the world’s most renowned designers and builders of custom swimming pools, spas and other forms of aquatic architecture.  His design firm, Questar Pools and Spas, has been retained internationally on acclaimed and award-winning works of art for decades, and his attention to detail and high standards is second-to-none.  His rise to public prominence first crystallized in 1993 when The Robb Report declared him “the world’s most influential swimming pool designer.”  Since then he has received almost-constant coverage in trade magazines and television segments. Many regard him as the world’s leading authority on vanishing edge design. Phillips has provided expert witness services for more than 350 construction defect cases and is regularly interviewed for magazines throughout the world.  Prior to being a Genesis 3, Inc. Ambassador, Phillips was active with the National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI), serving as National President and hosting the first Congressional reception for the pool and spa industry in Washington, DC in 1993.

Anita Sayed, Ph.D.
Loveland, Colorado

Anita’s undergraduate studies were done in Cambridge, England and her graduate work was at the University of Michigan. She is the recipient of the MIT Entrepreneur award as well as the recipient of the federal government's small business award for “Excellence in export”.  She and her team were awarded the American Advertising Association Award in advertising excellence for several different advertising campaigns. She is also the creator of the Microsoft office logo. Anita was a member of the U.S. trade mission to Japan during President Regan’s last two years in office and also the first two years of George W. Bush’s presidency. Anita currently serves as Senior Vice President and Group Manager at Playcore. The aquatic group consists of Colorado Time Systems, Spectrum Aquatics, Fountain People and Water Odyssey. Anita speaks six languages and comes from a British, Indian, Swedish and Saudi heritage. 

Brian Van Bower
Miami, FL

Bower has more than 45 years of professional experience in the pool and spa industry.  He is currently active with two companies:  President of Aquatic Consultants, Inc., an international consulting and design firm specializing in upscale and unusual pool and waterscape designs and he is also Ambassador and co-founder of Genesis 3, Inc.  Bower holds a Florida State Commercial Pool Contractors license, has served the former National Spa and Pool Institute (NSPI) in various capacities since 1979 including President of Region VII (Florida), NSPI National Vice President, Region VII, and he was inducted into the NSPI, Region VII Hall of Fame in 1994.  He chaired the NSPI International Design Award Committee from 1997-1999. Throughout his career, Bower has won more than 100 industry design awards and he and his company’s work have been featured in many national periodicals, magazines and television shows. His expertise and projects are regularly featured in industry trade publications, Home Magazine’s TV Show, Ambiance Piscines (France) and Aqua.  He has contributed to SPLASH magazine in Australia and his work was prominently featured in the tabletop book, “Dream Pools” by Deborah Dietsch in 2002.
