WAHC 2016: Keynote Speakers
Learn More About This Year’s Renowned Speakers
This year, the World Aquatic HealthTM Conference is offering a special insight to what water can do for your body, mind, and soul with opening Keynote Speakers, Dr. Wallace J. Nichols and Bruckner Chase. Both of these men spend the majority of their time in water and when they aren’t living Blue Mind, they’re spreading the word about it. But you may be asking yourself, what is Blue Mind? Well let’s dive deeper to find out.
Blue Mind and What it Means
To put it shortly, Blue Mind is a lifestyle. A lifestyle that author, Dr. Nichols, put into words that created a best-selling novel: Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do.
The website, wallacejnichols.org, describes the ideology as the following:
“Blue Mind connects the dots: neuroscience and psychology, nature and conservation, art and science, poetry and practice in profoundly important new ways. The result is an emerging, exciting, fast-growing new field we call Neuroconservation. With new research and more discoveries about ‘blue space’ yet to come.”
What to Expect from the Morning Keynotes
Dr. Nichols combines cutting edge research with compelling personal stories to show how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success. Thursday Morning's opening address will not only illustrate the crucial importance of the human being’s connection to water, but also provide a paradigm-shifting blueprint for a better life.
Professional Aquaman, Bruckner Chase, will begin Friday with his speech,Getting in the Pool, which directly illuminates and correlates to Dr. Nichols’ Blue Mind in action. Thanks to Bruckner’s journey, you will be inspired by his deep connection with water through real work examples of cognitive, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual benefits of aquatic water. Bruckner will illustrate new ways of creating sustainable connections across all ages.

Dr. Wallace “J.” Nichols is a scientist, wild water advocate, movement-maker, New York Times bestselling author, and father. His research and expeditions have taken him to coasts and waterways across North, Central, and South America, to Asia, Africa, Australia, and Europe. Nichols is a Research Associate at California Academy of Sciences and co-founder of Ocean Revolution, an international network of young ocean advocates, SEE the WILD, a conservation travel network, Grupo Tortuguero, an international sea turtle conservation network, and Blue Mind Fund, which aims to reconnect people to water. He has authored and co-authored more than 200 scientific papers, articles, and reports and his work has been broadcasted on NPR, BBC, PBS, CBS This Morning, Discovery Channel, National Geographic and Animal Planet as well as featured in Time, Newsweek, GQ, Outside Magazine, Fast Company, Scientific American, and New Scientist, among others.
Bruckner Chase is an internationally recognized ocean advocate and professional waterman who pioneers open water adventures, competes on the world stage as an endurance athlete, and shares his passions with communities around the world through innovative programs designed to connect us to the waters he loves. His unique approach to the aquatic environment draws on experiences in the oceans and communities around the world. It also provides an intimate understanding of how both our body and mind work and perform in endurance sports.
It’s easy to see, Blue Mind has a following, known as The Tribe:
“A special group of patrons, the Blue Mind Tribe, supports the Blue Mind Fund financially and with their trust in our innovative and highly collaborative work. Partnering with several leading non-profit organizations, a wide range of international students, and businesses across many sectors all leads to a bigger, wider, stronger blue movement for wild, healthy oceans and waterways.”
After listening to both Dr. Nichols and Bruckner, you may just want to join the tribe as well!
This year at the WAHC, you will be able to purchase the book Blue Mind during registration or at the conference. Be sure to attend the Nichols Meet and Greet to get your copy of the book signed!
