Aquatic therapy is a somewhat new treatment option for therapists, with relatively few outcome studies to support its effectiveness (in comparison, for example, to a pill for hypertension). Even within the relatively broad “field” of physical medicine and rehabilitation, there is a lack of knowledge about the effectiveness of most treatment interventions. To combat this, researchers create systematic reviews where they combine the results of smaller studies in order to make a reasonable statement about the effectiveness of these interventions. With these new “studies of studies”, researchers are now able to make practical guidelines and recommendations related to aquatic therapy and exercise. 

Below is an incomplete list of some of the most recent publications which examine aquatic therapy and aquatic exercise through a systematic review or meta-analysis. It can serve as a birds-eye showing the progress related to this technique.
