POOL INSPECTION DATA In June 2003, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported swimming pool inspection data from six regions in the United States. A total of 22,131 inspections were performed. Of these, 5,385 of the inspections identified the pool type so that performance versus pool type can be tracked. A total of 21,561 violations of the local pool codes were documented in these inspections. Immediate pool closures occurred in 8.3% of the inspections. Pool operators should recognize the need to maintain diligence in operating the pool in compliance with local codes. The inspections showed that 1 in 10 times, the chlorine residual was outside code limits. In jurisdictions that required operator training, about 1 in 4 facilities did not have trained operators. Inadequate records were found in 1 in 6 of the facilities inspected. Overall, there are opportunities to improve. This presentation was given at the NSPI International Expo on November 11, 1994, by Lawrence F. Rakestraw of Occidental Chemical Corporation. It discusses the disinfection portion of the “1992 Pinellas County Study." The full report is titled "A Comprehensive Study on The Microbicidal Properties of Stabilized and Unstabilized Chlorine and The Relationships of Other Chemical and Physical Variables in Public Swimming Pools; A Report on A Study Carried Out in Pinellas County, Florida, Summer/Fall, 1992." This study was jointly conducted by the Pinellas County Public Health Unit and Occidental Chemical Corporation. The full report is available from the National Swimming Pool Foundation (www.nspf.org or 719-540-9119) or from Occidental Chemical Corporation (877-873-4767). Note that this copy of the paper was reformatted in 2004 and some minor typographical errors were corrected. In addition, the figures were regenerated from the original data set so that the entire paper could be prepared as a Word document. There was no change in the content of the original paper. |
FLORIDA STUDY DETAILS Below are links to a report entitled: "A Comprehensive Study on The Microbicidal Properties of Stabilized and Unstabilized Chlorine and The Relationships of Other Chemical and Physical Variables in Public Swimming Pools; A Report on A Study Carried Out in Pinellas County, Florida, Summer/Fall, 1992". As indicated by the title page, the study was conducted by the Pinellas County Public Health Unit and Occidental Chemical Corporation. The purpose of the report is to not only summarize the results of the study but also to serve as an information repository for the Pinellas County Public Health Unit. As a consequence, the report is much larger than most technical reports. Hence, the report was subdivided into four sections so that figures and tables in the appendices could be easily referenced while reading the text of the report. A complete report therefore consists of four notebooks or files with the:
