Aquatic Recreation to Aquatic Therapy:
The Known Benefits of Aquatic Exercise for Seniors

Kim R. Beason, Ph.D. - University of Mississippi

World over aquatic practitioners and researchers provide anecdotal and empirical evidence that water based programs cause physiological, psychological, and social benefits for older adults. This presentation highlights the multitudinous health benefits that aquatic exercise and therapy programming provides for senior adults and offers examples of empirical research, case study of selected community-based aquatic programs, and first-person comments of senior adult participants and clients.

Dr. Kim Beason is an associate professor of health, exercise science and recreation management and has been the director of the senior adult aquatic program at the University of Mississippi for the past twenty years. His research centers on the multitudinous benefits gained by older adults from exercise in a low to moderate intensity community-based aquatic exercise regimen. He has presented and published several interdisciplinary papers on the multitudinous benefits that aquatic exercise provides to individuals with age, condition, and disease issues. He serves the profession through membership in the National Recreation and Park Association’s National Aquatic Society, the Aquatic Exercise Association, and the Aquatic Therapy and Research Institute.
