The Art and Science lecture is based on Dr. Garry Killgore’s extensive scientific and experiential research, the goal of the lecture is to enhance the understanding and appreciation of aquatic training and rehabilitation from a scientific and practical perspective, specifically for athletes. To achieve this goal, an analysis of proper form and technique of deep and shallow water running, as well as related appropriate exercises, plyometrics, and drills will be presented. In conjunction, relevant scientific principles as they apply in an aquatic environment will be discussed, e.g. buoyancy, drag, density, depth of water, anthropometric differences, shod vs. barefoot, metabolic, physiological, and psychological effects, etc. The emphasis during the presentation of Water Training for Anyone And Everyone is how to take the aforementioned material and directly apply those concepts beyond an athletic population to anyone and everyone. Dr. Garry Killgore is in his 20th year as Linfield College’s (NCAA III) Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field Coach. Killgore was named NCAA III Indoor and Outdoor T&F Men’s Coach of the Year for the West Region in 2007; Indoor and Outdoor T&F Women’s Coach of the Year for the West Region in 2006, the Northwest Conference Men’s T&F Coach of the Year in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, and 1996, and 2007. He was also named Women’s T&F Coach of the Year in 1993 and in 1996. In addition, Killgore’s athletes have earned eight national titles and over 70 all-American and 45 academic All-American honors, as well as competed in the 1992 and 1996 Canadian Olympic Trials (PV) and the 1996 and 2000 US Olympic Trials (1500/800). Killgore is the former chair of the men’s and women’s track and field committee for the Oregon Association of USAT&F. He was a research associate for the USAT&F Sport Sciences in the biomechanics of javelin, hammer, and steeplechase. He is a full professor of Human Performance and earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics in 2003. He has published and presented on the biomechanics of running, prevention of running-related injuries and scientific concepts applied to coaching. His specialty is alternative training for athletes with a primary focus on water training and conditioning with an emphasis on deep-water running, water plyometrics and speed development, and/or circuits. He has delivered lectures, clinics, and workshops on this material in England, Ireland, Spain, and across the USA. He is the Founder and President of AQx Sports, a company pioneering new concepts in hydrodynamic training.
