Recreational Water Illness (RWIs) & Disinfected Venues: Lessons Learned in 2008

Michele C. Hlavsa is an epidemiologist with the Healthy Swimming Program in the Division of Parasitic Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. She has a Masters in Public Health in epidemiology from Emory University and is a graduate of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, CDC’s disease detective group. She has worked on a number of outbreak investigations of foodborne and waterborne diseases in her 6 years at CDC. The overriding objective of CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program is to decrease the risk of recreational water illness and improve the public’s swimming experience. Michele collaborates with state and local health authorities and the private sector on public health issues related to the spread of pathogens that cause recreational water illness, in particular Cryptosporidium, and development of appropriate prevention and control measures.
