Recreational Water Illnesses: Reversing the Trend Will Require Education and Investment

Michael Beach, Ph.D. is the Associate Director for Healthy Water in the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention’s National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-borne, and Enteric Disease. He is also the Team Leader for the Water and Environment Activity, Division of Parasitic Diseases, CDC. He manages the division’s waterborne disease activities including outbreak investigations, CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program, and the national Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System. He also serves as a liaison within CDC to assist in coordination of water-related disease issues and activities. He collaborates with EPA, state and local health authorities, and the private sector on issues related to the public health implications arising from the spread of waterborne disease in both recreational and drinking water and on development of appropriate prevention measures.
