Providing Some Sanity to the Insanity Associated
with Running Large Swimming Meets

This presentation will focus on many different aspects associated with management of swimming meets. A significant portion of the presentation will center on use of technology and the use of web sites to enhance the organization of the competition both before and after the event is held.

Also presented will be guidelines and suggestions including, but not limited to, various aspects such as email distribution lists, checklists, facility dos and don’ts, staffing (both facility and meet staff members), overall meet management, pre-meet preparation and post-meet follow-up.

Jonathan Smith, Ed.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Physical Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, PA. He has total administrative responsibilities of the university aquatics programming and instruction of numerous classes of an aquatics base (SCUBA, Aquatics for PE Majors, Lifeguarding, WSI, etc.). He served as coordinator for pre-student teaching experiences for HPED majors and advisor to Phi Epsilon Kappa.

He works extensively in conjunction with swimming coaches, graduate assistants, twenty-plus member student staff, graduate study coordinators, and student teaching and internship coordinators. Dr. Smith is also responsible for advisement of undergraduate majors and service on numerous departmental and university-wide committees. He is currently serving as the Chair of the IUP University Senate (2002-present).

Dr. Smith received his B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his M.S. in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and his doctorate in Sport Management from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has fifteen years of competitive swimming experience with varsity team records in intercollegiate, high school and age group programs. He has over 10 years of age group, high school and intercollegiate coaching, having coached numerous league, district, regional and state champions. He has extensive experience in hosting/supervising large-scale multi-team swimming championship competitions.

Dr. Smith is currently certified as a PIAA and NCAA Swimming Official, a PA Administrative I/Secondary Principal, a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Master Scuba Diving Trainer, a NSPF® Certified Pool-Spa Operator® Instructor a NIRSA Recreational Sports Specialist and a PA Pesticide Applicator. He has a PA Teaching Certification in Health and Physical Education K-12 and is certified by the American Red Cross in Lifeguard Training, Water Safety, CPR, and First Aid and Adapted Aquatics.
